Our ruggest coastline scenery will inspire even the most amateur of photographers. Be sure to visit the Long Point Lighthouse for guided tours and to watch for icebergs which drift down from the North Atlantic during the summer months, slowly making their way through Iceberg Alley. As you enter Twillingate, be sure to stop at the Prime Berth, our newest museum featuring old time fishing gear and treasures from days long past. The Prime Berth also offers boat rides in a traditional Newfoundland motor boat, coffee, tea and Newfoundland crafts. Climb the look-out for a glorious view of the bay.
Take a stroll on Back Harbour Beach one evening. It's famed for its beautiful sunsets. Back Harbour is also the site of the 1963 pre-Beothuck archaeological dig. Stop at St. Peter's Anglican Church, built in 1839, to admire the expert craftsmanship in design and architecture. At the Anglican cemetery in Snelling's Cove, there is a monument erected to Miss Georgina Stirling, the world-famous soprano opera singer who died here in her native town in 1935.
If you're shopping for souvenirs, check out the craft shop in our local museum. Better still, take the kids to the beach. Nature walks along seaside cliffs and on local beaches will bring forth interesting specimens of shells, rocks and driftwood.
If you happen to be here in late July during the annual Fish, Fun and Folk Festival, take part in the week long party. There's plenty to do for everyone.
Want to take a closer look at the icebergs?
Maybe catch the whales and dolphins at play? With three boat tour operators in town, you can be sure of getting a chance. Finding accomodations shouldn't be too difficult. There are several beautiful Bed and Breakfast homes in town as well as the Anchor Inn Motel.
For the outdoor enthusiasts, there are two parks on the island which offer adequate camping facilities - Spencer Park, located in Back Harbour and Seabreeze Municipal Park, located in Crow Head. Dildo Run Park, just a twenty minute drive to nearby New World Island, also provides comfortable camping sites with shower and laundry facilities.
Though nightlife is not extensive on the island, four clubs provide adequate entertainment for those who enjoy an evening out amidst laughter and music. A wide variety of retail stores can provide you with all your holiday needs.
Be sure to visit soon. Twillingate Island actually consists of a number of small communities. Each has much to offer the visiting tourist.
